The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) that was launched by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, on August 22 and has come into effect from October 1. The BNCAP guidelines are an iteration of the GNCAP tests, however, more geared towards Indian Standards, specifically, the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. The goal is to rigorously assess new vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes for their safety standards.
